Tchaikovsky Sixth Symphony (“Pathétique”) and Boyer Tchaikovsky 6.1
with Boyer Celebration Overture and Silver Fanfare
Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Golan
Albany Records (forthcoming in late 2008)

In June 2007, Lawrence Golan, Resident Conductor of The Phoenix Symphony and Music Director of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra at the University of Denver, led recording sessions with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc, Czech Republic, for a recording to be released by Albany Records. The repertoire was an unusual pairing of composers: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Peter Boyer.

The impetus for the project was Golan’s strikingly unusual idea for a commission: a work to be performed in concert immediately following the Tchaikovsky Sixth Symphony, the famous “Pathétique,” with the new work to be entitled Tchaikovsky 6.1. Golan commissioned this work from Boyer through the Lamont Symphony Orchestra at the University of Denver in May 2007, then took this unusual Tchaikovsky-Boyer pairing to the Czech Republic, where it was performed again and recorded.

Filling out the Albany Records release are two other Boyer works: Celebration Overture, in a premiere recording of the revised version of that work from 2002, and Silver Fanfare, which had been the first movement of On Music’s Wings for the Pacific Symphony’s 25th anniversary in 2004, also a premiere recording.
